ENJOYING JAVEA - WHERE TO START?

Javea has so much to offer it's hard to know where to start.

Whatever your decision for relocating to Javea you can be sure it will fill your wish list.

For those just wanting to buy a holiday home in Javea the choice is varied. An easy to maintain apartment for example that is easy to lock up and come and go with no need to worry about putting maintenance plans in place. There are apartments for sale in Javea with swimming pools, communal gardens, private terraces and balconies with great views and near the beaches. Also near restaurants and bars. In other words, offering most things to fulfill your holiday requirements.

If your plan is to move to Javea with your family to live permanently or to retire full time then you may decide on a different option.

Maybe you want to live in Javea but need to commute for work. Simple by road, rail and air.

Whatever your reason, there are many things to enjoy and appreciate. Javea offers the best of all worlds.

Sports opportunities are extensive and endless disciplines available including:

There are clubs for most things you can think of through the U3A. As well as theatre groups, choirs, music.

Churches of varying denominations as well as the beautiful and imposing San Bartoleme in the heart of Javea old town and the unique fishermen's church in Javea port, with a ceiling resembling the keel of a fishing boat. Faith celebrations are prominent.

Throughout the year there are music events, jazz concerts, rock and folk groups, visiting fun fairs and circuses, as well as new release films at the Javea port cinema.

During the summer months you can even take your own chair to the Arenal sandy beach to enjoy the film showing once a week in the open air - watch recent films lying on the beach under the moonlight! How unique is that?

The year starts with the arrival and procession of the Three Kings on January 5

Traditionally Spanish children receive their presents on January 6

(unless they've been naughty in which case they will get a piece of charcoal)

January 6 is a public holiday.

Also in January is the Blessing of the Animals, San Antonio Abad,

when you can take along your pet to be included.

Next up, February, sees the Carnival Celebrations

with informal parades of adults and children in fancy costume.

March 19 is Fathers' Day - a public holiday in Valencian Region.

It is also the Valencian festival of the Fallas - large papier-maché statues erected in the streets depicting current local topics.

The festival culminates on March 19 with the burning of the statues

and a magnificent firework display.

Then comes Easter when there is a street market in Javea Old Town

Between end of April and 3 May there is a religious event which also

includes floral crosses being put up and judged in various streets in the Old Town.

Suprisingly there is also bull running in the streets during this period.

June 24, San Juan, is a major festival in Javea Old Town and covers 10+ days,

beginning earlier in the month with bull running and different days

devoted to various groups and activities.

The whole thing culminates on 24th with a parade of

many colourful and decorated floats from which sweets and novelties are thrown.

Children have a great time collecting all the goodies.

The festival closes with a fantastic firework display at midnight .

At end of June, early July, is the International Festival

This is held on Via Augusta near Javea port and involves participating stalls from all nationalities

in Javea, each presenting their national specialities. Music, dancing and folk presentations are included and the whole event is extremely popular.

July not only has the Moors and Christians festival with its varied re-enactment of events,

fantastic costumes, parades and spectacular firework display to close with

but July also includes the unusual and rare spectacle of Live Chess,

with children representing the chess pieces.

The last of the annual fiestas takes place in the port at

the end of August until end of first week of September and is

basically a religious celebration for the fishermen although

it involves lots of fun activities too. The controversial Bulls in the Sea,

which involves chasing the bulls into the sea is also part of the festivities.

The penultimate day involves a parade of floats but the final day is a solemn procession.

The next day, 9 September, is when all schools restart the new school year.
